This Indian Forecasting Breakthrough Can Warn You Two Hours Ahead — Down To The Village
Between 2022 and 2024, India saw an 18% rise in the number of heatwave days up from just 5% in 2020. The result? More crop damage, more power outages, more health emergencies. The Centre for Science and Environment reported that 2024 alone had more weather-related crop loss than the two previous years combined.
BFS enters at a time when these extreme weather events are no longer rare - they're regular. With this system, hyperlocal alerts for rain, hailstorms, and floods can be issued in advance, giving people time to protect themselves, their homes, and their livelihoods.
Powered By One Of India's Fastest Supercomputers
Behind this leap is Arka, a supercomputer installed at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune. It processes massive amounts of weather data - 11.77 petaflops worth in just four hours. That's more than twice as fast as the previous system, Pratyush, which took 10 hours.
This speed means forecasts are updated more frequently and accurately. And with data from 40 Doppler Weather Radars feeding into the system soon to expand to 100 BFS can issue real-time, area-specific alerts across the country.
Who Benefits And How
BFS will be a game-changer across sectors:
Agriculture: Farmers can plan sowing and harvesting with near real-time accuracy.
Aviation: Pilots and airlines get sharper visibility on storm cells and wind shear.
Disaster Management: Flood-prone regions receive early warnings, helping officials act before disaster hits.
Urban Planning: Cities can better manage heatwave responses and stormwater drainage.
Defence and Infrastructure: Strategic operations can factor in terrain-specific weather risks.
In short, this model is about how a smarter forecast can protect the economy from food prices to freight logistics.
The Road Ahead
The Bharat Forecasting System doesn't stop at monsoons. As Doppler radar networks expand, and computing gets even faster, India is on track to offer two-hour "nowcasts" across every district turning what used to be guesswork into a precise science.
From Forecast To Foresight
India's new weather system is more than a technological flex, it's a practical tool that touches everyday life. It brings clarity to chaos, giving farmers, families, pilots, and planners the power to act with confidence. With BFS, the forecast isn't just about what's coming, it's about being ready for it.
Whether it's a rainstorm in a remote village or a heatwave over a megacity, the ability to see it coming and do something about it is no longer a luxury. It's here, and it's made in India.
