Any container use for gardening, old or new can be used for plants. The container should consist drainage holes or you can even place the potted plants into the containers as it saves the risk of plant growth.
The size of the container is decided on the size of the plant (at least 1/3rd of the plant). Bigger plants need more soil, more water thus a bigger container. Small plants can even be grown in cups and saucers. Shallow rooted plants like herbs can thrive even in tiny garden containers.
Clay pots: It is always nice to plant in terra cotta pots as it is eco-friendly and looks natural. Concrete: One of the very reasons why gardeners prefer concrete is because they can grow big plants. Cycas, mini palm variety can be grown in these pots. Concrete pots are too heavy and suit bigger gardens. One advantage of having these pots is that the pots cannot be taken away or stolen by anybody. It suits vegetables and fruits like berries.
Wood: wooden baskets are best suited to grow beans and tomatoes. Wooden containers retain water, light weight and eco-friendly. Going for rot-resistant wooden containers like redwood, cedar will be a good choice for container gardening. Other wood varieties can be painted with non toxic paints and used.
