When I went for my final medical examination before pregnancy, the doctor smiled and asked my husband, 'Wow, are you expecting too?'. It was only then that it hit me that my husband had put on as much weight as me during my pregnancy. It is common for guys to gain weight when their wife is pregnant. But do you know why men gain weight during the pregnancy of their wives. There are some very valid reasons for this.

When guys gain weight while their wife is pregnant, it called the sympathetic weight gain syndrome. However, men gain weight during the pregnancy of their wife due to many more reasons other than plain sympathy. Women are generally very insecure about gaining the extra weight during pregnancy. So, men often gain weight themselves just to make their wife feel better about the pregnancy.

To Reduce Work

If you want to diet, you have to cook and eat food that is healthy and lean. The pregnant woman is hardly in the the right mind to cook diet food. So, basically the men eat whatever comes their way.

Cravings

If your wife is craving for hot chocolate fudge, you have to take her out to a nice place to have it. And when you do indulge her cravings, you will also end up sharing them.

Eating Leftovers

Pregnant women are extremely temperamental. At one point of time, they feel like having fried chicken. And at the next, they can't stand the sight of chicken. So, if you have just spend some hard cash on buying fried chicken, you won't throw it in the bin. You will eat it and get fat yourself.

Stress

Men usually get fat because they are stressed thoughout their wife's pregnancy. And stress hormones contribute to making you fat.

To Avoid The Question, 'Am I Getting Fat?'

Women are famous for asking this question at least once a week when they are normal. So, imagine how many times they ask this question when they are pregnant! Men usually never have an apt reply to this question. So, it is much easier for them to say, 'I have gained much more weight than you, baby'.

Men Don't Realise They Are Getting Fat

Pregnant women step on the weighing scale every week to see how much they have gained. However, men's weight gain goes unnoticed till they cannot ignore the fact that they are not fitting into their clothes. It is the pot belly that is always visible first.
