The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association ( NAPABA ) Award For Indian Born 'Rita Gunasekaran'
Rita Gunasekaran, an India-born lawyer in the U.S, is one of the recipient of the 2007 NAPABA Trailblazer Award, NAPABA's highest honour. The award recognizes outstanding achievements, commitment, and leadership of NAPABA lawyers.
NAPABA honours a member from each region in the U.S. They are marked on specific selected criteria, the selection being made by the regional governors and the affiliates in their region every year. Their paths and achievements are often very different. However, they have all demonstrated vision, courage, and tenacity in their careers, making substantial and lasting contributions to both the Asian Pacific American legal community and the broader Asian Pacific American community. Last year Rita Gunasekaran was listed among the top 50 women lawyers and top appellate lawyers of Southern California.
Rita Gunasekaran, was born in Chennai on March 10, 1943. She did her B.Sc. from Queen Mary's College in Madras in 1962, and her B.L from Madras Law College, Madras, in 1964. The very year she was admitted in the bar council in Madras in 1964, and later in 1983 at California, in 1984 at U.S. District Court, Central District of California, in 1987 at U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit and in 1994 at the U.S. Supreme Court. She also served on the boards of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center from 2003 to 2006, Public Counsel from 1997 to 2003, and the Center for Civic Education from 2001 to 2002.
