Helpline Launched For Diabetic Patients
Kochi, Nov 14 (UNI) Stressing the need for people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, Kerala Govenor R L Bhatia today launched the state's first helpline for diabetics.
Inaugurating the valedictory function of the three-day 'Diafest 2006' organised by Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) here, he said the WHO theme for 'World Diabetes Day', observed on November 14 every year, was 'Diabetes Care for Everyone'.
The helpline for diabetics, described by AIMS as the first in the state, would be functional from 0830 to 1730 hrs, Monday to Saturday. The number of the helpline was 9895811011.
Stressing the need for proper awareness to prevent diabetes, the Governor said, 'I am told by experts that it is a disease that can be prevented, and in most cases reversed. If we fail to prevent or cure diabetes with sensible nutrition, proper medication and systematic exercise, it may lead to grave disorders and graver ailments.'' Underlining the need to educate and motivate people on a healthy lifestyle, he said the efficacy of periodic check-ups coupled with medical intervention should be driven home at all levels.
On the occasion, the Governor released three books on diabetes, brought out by the Endocrinology Department of AIMS, including one on recipes for diabetics, based on Kerala cuisine.
'Diafest 2006' included documentary screenings and exhibitions, competitions for medicos and awareness classes for general public.
