A day after rumours of sea water in Mumbai turning sweet, reports of idols of gods and goddesses drinking milk came in from different parts of the country today.

Reports of idols drinking milk poured in from the Capital, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Bihar.

A similar phenomenon occurred more than a decade ago involving Ganesha idols.

Hundreds of people began queuing up at temples in the capital following bizarre reports that the idols had begun ''drinking milk''.

Long queues were reported outside temples in Mayur Vihar, East of Kailash and elsewehre in the city.

''I am told that all idols are drinking milk. People are also offering milk to the idols in their homes,'' VHP state media incharge Vinod Bansal said.

People began flocking temples following TV reports about the ''miracle'' in neighbouring states.

Thousands of people in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh thronged to a Durga temple following reports that the idol was having milk offered by devotees.

The rumour spread in the morning when a woman claimed that the milk she had offered to goddess Durga was consumed. Following her claim, thousands of people thronged the temple carrying milk in buckets, bowls and spoons to appease the goddess.

Soon, a similar occurence was reported from a nearby Shiv temple.

A similar report was received from Rae Bareli.

In Patna, the rumour that idols of Shiv and Durga were ''drinking milk'' in a temple at Bhavar Pokhar area spread like fire and soon thousands thronged the temple to feed the idols.

The phenomenon was reported from other temples also. A large number of women were seen queuing up before various temples in the city wearing yellow sarees.
