Dahi Handi 2023: On the next day of Janmashtami, Dahi Handi is celebrated, which commemorates the mischievous deeds of Lord Krishna during his childhood. Lord Krishna is believed to be the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu.
The term Dahi Handi comes from two terms 'Dahi' which means curd and 'handi' which means earthen pot that is used to keep and process milk products. This festival is primarily celebrated in Maharashtra (where it is known as Gopalakala) and northern parts of India during the month of August and September. Let us know more about this day.

This year, Dahi Handi will be celebrated on Thursday, 7 September 2023. The Ashtami tithi will begin at 03:37 pm on 6 September 2023 and Ashtami tithi will end at 04:14 pm on 7 September 2023.
Dahi Handi 2023: History And Significance
Dahi Handi commemorates the way of living of Lord Krishna. Symbolically it is a day that is a reenactment of his fondness for butter, which he used to steal from 'Handis' (earthen pots). The festival is marked by the thrill of forming a human pyramid to reach a Dahi Handi (curd in an earthen pot) hung high above the ground. The person at the topmost part of the pyramid, known as 'Govinda', breaks the Handi by hitting it with a stick or their hand.
