Tirukkural - 'ON VIRTUE' - In Praise Of God - Kural - 7

- Tanakkuvamai illatan talcerntark kallal
Manakkavalai marral aritu.
They alone escape the anxieties of the mind,
Who seek refuge with the peerless one.
Only those who seek and attain the haven of God's own peace, by contemplation on Him, can hope to save themselves from life's troubles and anguish. The poet's view here is of special significance to the modern world, where advances in medical science have given us control over all physiological diseases; but still there is no other way found to get over the increasing mental and psychological strains and stress than to bow in worship before the incomparable one, the Almighty Lord of the Universe.
Lord Krishna said to Arjuna in Gitopadesha:
'He who sees Me in all things and sees all things in Me, he never becomes separated from Me, nor do I become separated from him' (Gita p. 6; 30).
When that union is reached there will be no place for mental anxieties of any kind.
The description of God as the 'peerless one' 'Thanakuvamai Illaathaan,' has its beautiful parallel in Thirumurugattupadai'.
'Ninnoddu puraiunar illaap pulamaiyyoi ' ( Murugu 279-280)
The whole Kural has been bodily adapted in the latter classic of 'Kambaramayanam' as follows:
'Vandanai avan kazal vaitha poddhalaal,
Cindhai vengodundhuyar theerkalaadhenraan'
The above two passages are as quoted by K V Jagannathan in his Research edition on Tirukkural from which I have quoted elsewhere also.
