Will perish in the midst of evil, if he takes to covetousness.
Sages would say that it is God's design to actuate all beings on earth, ultimately to be together by the bonds of universal love & charity. If that were so, it would be foolish to let greedy thoughts enter the mind and go counter to that grand design. In any case, it is sure to lead them away from the path of righteousness and towards sure ruin. Therefore, it is essential to keep away from the sin of greed or covetousness.
The Christian doctrine of 'Love thy neighbour as thyself' is intended directly to promote this concept of universal love, through which alone, as the ultimate step in righteousness, one can reach Godhead.
