Cheiraoba 2026 Date: How and Why Manipur Welcomes New Year in April
While most of us wrap up New Year celebrations by January, in Manipur, the feeling of a fresh start comes a few months later. Celebrated as Cheiraoba, this New Year isn't about loud parties; it's about cleaning homes, sharing meals, and resetting life in a more grounded, meaningful way.
When Is Cheiraoba In 2026?
In 2026, Cheiraoba will be celebrated on April 14 (Tuesday).
The date usually falls in April (sometimes late March). This is because the festival follows the traditional calendar of the Meiteis, which aligns with natural and seasonal cycles rather than the Gregorian calendar.
What Is Cheiraoba?
Cheiraoba, or Sajibu Cheiraoba, is the festival celebrating the Manipuri New Year, mainly observed by the Meitei community of Manipur. It symbolises the start of a new year and the ending of the previous one.
Cheiraoba, unlike other festivities, does not include much noise and excitement but rather remains personal and close to heart.
Why Do Manipuris Celebrate New Year in April?
Cheiraoba is celebrated in April because it follows a traditional lunar-solar calendar rather than the widely used January 1 system. The lunisolar calendar begins the year in the month of Sajibu, falling between March and April. This date is not random since it is based on nature and the natural course of events. The month of April signifies the onset of spring, a time when there is rejuvenation and renewal.
The festival also marks the beginning of an agricultural season when new activities on the farm commence. Culturally, this festival also plays a very important role since some other festivals like Ugadi, Baisakhi, and Gudi Padwa also mark the commencement of the New Year. The Cheiraoba festival thus has a deep connection to the natural environment and culture.
Significance of Cheiraoba
Cheiraoba is not just a date-it's a mindset.
- Renewal and cleansing: Houses are thoroughly cleaned, signifying a new beginning and the embracing of positive energy.
- Spiritual aspect: Foods are offered to gods and spirits for blessings in the coming year.
- Aspiration and prosperity: There is a peculiar tradition of scaling hills in one's locality, which enables people to 'climb up' in life.
- Togetherness and strengthening of kinship bonds: Families celebrate and bond through feasting, praying, and other cultural customs.
How Cheiraoba Is Celebrated
The celebrations are simple yet meaningful:
- Cleaning and decorating homes
- Preparing traditional dishes (offered first to deities)
- Family feasts and gatherings
- Ritual offerings and prayers
- Climbing hills for symbolic growth and good fortune
- Even outside Manipur, communities continue these traditions, keeping the essence of Cheiraoba alive.
