Once a couple who had renounced the world undertook a pilgrimage. As they treaded along, with the husband walking a little ahead the wife, he spotted a diamond on the ground. He at once took to scratching the ground to hide the diamond unaware of the wife.

The wife who caught up with him enquired as to what he was doing. The husband tried to give an evasive answer but the wife on discovering his intentions said, "Why did you leave the world when you still harbour the distinction between diamond and dust?".

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa thus says that equal vision or attitude to things is the true sign of renunciation.
