Infant Care During Dengue Fever: Keeping Your Baby Safe in Mosquito Season
Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease, is a serious concern in India. With frequent outbreaks in the country, we should be well-informed and prepared, especially when it comes to caring for your precious infants.
When it comes to safeguarding your little one, you can't afford to take any chances. So, let's explore some simple yet scientifically-backed tips every parent should know for the care of infants during dengue fever outbreaks in India.

Infant Care During Dengue Fever
While babies can contract dengue, the good news is that the incidence rate among infants is relatively low. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), only about 2-3% of reported dengue cases involve infants under the age of one.
Infants often show mild to moderate symptoms of dengue, which can include fever, rash, and mild bleeding from the nose or gums. However, severe cases of dengue are rare in this age group.

1. Mosquito-proof your home
Install mosquito nets on your baby's crib and windows. Use mosquito screens and seal any openings where mosquitoes can enter. Regularly check for stagnant water in and around your home to eliminate breeding sites.
2. Dress your baby wisely
Dress your baby in long-sleeved clothing and pants to minimise skin exposure. Use mosquito repellent creams or lotions approved for infants, and apply them sparingly on exposed skin.
3. Maintain a clean environment
Keep your baby's surroundings clean and tidy. Dispose of garbage properly and avoid clutter that may attract mosquitoes.

4. Monitor your baby's health
Fever is the primary symptom of dengue. If your baby develops a fever, consult a paediatrician immediately. Do not administer over-the-counter medications without professional advice.
5. Safe mosquito repellents
Consult your paediatrician for safe mosquito repellents suitable for infants. Avoid using products with DEET on babies under two months old.
If you suspect your baby has dengue, consult a paediatrician immediately. Early detection and medical care can make a significant difference in the outcome.

On A Final Note...
Protecting your baby from dengue during mosquito season is paramount, especially in India where the disease is prevalent.
