Does IVF Cause Twin Births?
A new study says that procedures like IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) could increase the chances of giving birth to twins. Also, this procedure can minimise the chances of unintended twin-birth too.

A recent study says that the birth rate of twins has significantly increased in the recent decades mainly due to the technologies like IVF. Though twins pose no specific problems, certain complications like low birth weight or preterm birth tend to be common in such pregnancies.

Though many couples don't intend to have twins, usage of such technologies may increase the chances of having twins, say researchers. Experts say that when twins naturally occur, there isn't much we can do about it but when using IVF technology, one can avoid it.

Generally, while using such technologies, two eggs are fertilised just to ensure that one out of them will successfully develop. The main reason why doctors try to fertilise two eggs at a time is to ensure that the success rate would be high.

Also, as the costs of the procedure are too high, people prefer to increase the chances of twins than reduce the probability to 0. But in the future, when the costs become more affordable, the rate of twin pregnancies can be decreased.
