Tattoo Ink Could Harm Your Lymph Nodes & Immunity; Ways To Prevent Tattoo Infection
Here is how a tattoo can affect the lymph nodes and immune system. Check it out.
Getting yourself inked could be one of the coolest thing and a style statement but when you get to learn about this dangerous side-effect, then probably you will withdraw your plan of getting a tattoo done.
A new study has warned - getting a permanent tattoo can lead to enlargement of the lymph nodes, which is an important part of our immune system.
According to the researchers, the toxic impurities contained in the tattoo ink can travel inside the body in the form of nano-particles and affect the lymph nodes.
Tattoo inks contain organic pigments, but at the same time it also contains preservatives and contaminants like nickel, chromium, manganese or cobalt.
Apart from carbon black, the other common ingredient used in tattoo inks is titanium dioxide (TiO2). Delayed healing, along with skin elevation and itching, are often associated with white tattoos, and by consequence with the use of TiO2.

During the study, the researchers at European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Germany used X-ray fluorescence measurements on ID21 which allowed them to locate titanium dioxide at the micro and nano range in the skin and the lymphatic environment.
They found a broad range of particles up to several micrometres in size in human skin, but only smaller (nano) particles were transported to the lymph nodes. This may lead to the chronic enlargement of the lymph node and lifelong exposure, as per the researchers.
The study was published in the journal, Scientific Reports.
