Three weeks before the unit was meant to fly out for the Don 3 shoot, Ranveer Singh walked away from the project. That decision has now caught up with him in a very public way.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has issued a non-cooperation directive (NCD) against Singh, effectively prohibiting directors, producers, and crew members from associating with him on future projects until the dispute is resolved. The ban, announced on Monday, is one of the most significant actions the federation has taken against a mainstream Bollywood actor in recent memory.

How the Don 3 Dispute Spiralled Into a Ban

Farhan Akhtar filed a complaint with FWICE on 11th April after Ranveer's sudden departure left Excel Entertainment scrambling, with pre-production already in motion.

The producers presented their case in detail. Ritesh Sidhwani appeared in person at the FWICE office while Farhan joined remotely from London over Zoom. They narrated the full incident for two hours, presenting audited expenses including hotel bookings, location bookings, and overseas travel arrangements for over 200 workers. The production house has reportedly sought Rs 45 crore in damages.

FWICE invited Ranveer Singh to appear before the federation and present his side of the matter. However, the body claims the actor failed to respond despite three reminders sent every 10 days. It was only on May 23 that Ranveer's secretary replied via email, arguing that the federation did not have jurisdiction over the matter.

That response did not go down well. "Superstar is not bigger than the law," Ashoke Pandit, Chief Advisor to FWICE, told reporters.

The FWICE Ban Is Conditional - But the Stakes Are High

The directive is not permanent. FWICE has left the door open for dialogue, offering Singh an opportunity to present his side in a formal hearing. However, the federation has made it clear that any resolution will require Singh to compensate the production team for the claimed losses.

Industry observers note the significance of the moment. Historically, Bollywood has been reluctant to impose such sweeping bans, preferring behind-the-scenes settlements. However, the Don 3 dispute has exposed deeper fractures in the industry's ability to enforce contracts fairly.

• Mika Singh (2019): The singer was banned from playback singing, public performances, and acting in India after performing at a wedding in Karachi, Pakistan, amid tense bilateral relations. FWICE said it was deeply pained by his decision. The ban lasted barely a week, after Singh issued a public apology and wrote to the federation saying he would accept everything mentioned had he made a mistake, the restriction was lifted.
• Alok Nath: The actor faced a ban after refusing to cooperate with FWICE's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) regarding a rape accusation. He was summoned thrice and failed to appear for any of the meetings. IFTDA subsequently sought a six-month ban, which was approved.
• Gauahar Khan (2021): The actress was issued a non-cooperation directive for two months after she allegedly went back to work on set despite testing positive for COVID-19. FWICE called the act "highly irresponsible" and warned that any member who cooperated with her during that period would face penalties.
• Fawad Khan and Pakistani Artists: Following the Uri attacks in 2016, FWICE issued a blanket directive calling for complete non-cooperation with all Pakistani artists, singers, and technicians within the Indian film and entertainment industry, a stance repeatedly reiterated during periods of heightened tension between the two countries.
• Diljit Dosanjh (2025): FWICE accused Dosanjh of brazenly insulting the Indian film industry after he was linked to a film collaboration involving a Pakistani artist, calling it "a shameful betrayal" and demanding that the Indian government revoke his citizenship. The move was widely criticised as disproportionate.

What This Means for Bollywood

If FWICE's directive against Ranveer Singh holds, it could embolden other associations to take similar action against actors who breach agreements, a development that could reshape power dynamics in Indian cinema.
