Rajkot Shaken By 21 Earthquake Tremors In 24 Hours, Should Gujarat Be Worried?
If you live in or around Rajkot, chances are the last 24 hours felt unsettling. Chairs shook, ceiling fans swayed slightly, and many people stepped outside instinctively. What made it more unnerving wasn't one strong jolt, it was the repetition.
From Thursday night till Friday afternoon, Rajkot district experienced 21 earthquake tremors, all small in magnitude but frequent enough to cause panic across several towns . Let's break down what actually happened, where it was felt, and what experts are saying.
How Many Tremors Were Recorded And When?
The first tremor struck at 8:43 pm Thursday near Upleta with a magnitude of 3.3. Overnight and into the early morning, residents felt 7 more tremors, followed by another 11 tremors from Friday morning to noon, with the strongest reaching 3.8 on the Richter scale.
None of these tremors crossed the "moderate" category, but the frequency and repeated shaking left many residents uneasy. In total, official reports confirmed 21 tremors from Thursday night to Friday afternoon.
Which Areas Felt The Shaking?
The epicentres were largely concentrated around:
- Upleta
- Dhoraji
- Jetpur
Several tremors originated within a 27-30 km radius of Upleta, which explains why shaking was felt across nearby towns and villages . Residents reported doors rattling, light furniture moving, and a brief sensation of the ground shifting enough for many families to step outside as a precaution.
Was There Any Damage Or Casualties?
The short answer: No.
- No loss of life
- No reported injuries
- No confirmed structural damage
District authorities and disaster response teams have confirmed that the tremors caused panic but no destruction .
Why Is Rajkot Experiencing Repeated Tremors?
Gujarat lies in a seismically active zone, influenced by fault lines linked to the Kutch and Kathiawar regions.
Experts describe the recent activity as an earthquake swarm, a cluster of small tremors occurring over a short period. These usually:
- Release built-up stress gradually
- Do not automatically signal a major earthquake
- Require close monitoring, not alarm
Scientists have clarified that minor tremors below magnitude 4 are common in this belt and often settle on their own .
Is There A Link To Past Earthquakes In Gujarat?
Rajkot has seen similar seismic patterns in recent years:
- 2023: A 4.3-magnitude quake with no damage
- Late 2023: A 3.9-magnitude tremor felt across the region
- Several low-intensity quakes between 2020-2024
While Gujarat does have a history of major earthquakes most notably the 2001 Bhuj quake, experts stress that current tremors are not comparable in scale or intensity.
What Should Residents Do Right Now?
Authorities are advising calm and awareness:
- Stay alert, not anxious
- Follow basic earthquake safety measures
- Avoid spreading unverified messages or predictions
Seismic monitoring in the region continues, and updates will be shared if there is any change in risk level.
Small Quakes, Big Questions But No Immediate Danger
Twenty-one tremors in less than a day will naturally raise concern especially in a region that remembers past disasters. But based on current data and expert assessment, these were minor, low-intensity earthquakes with no damage reported.
For now, Rajkot is dealing with movement, not mayhem. Staying informed, grounded, and cautious is the smartest response not panic.
As always, official updates matter more than rumours. And right now, the message is clear: monitoring continues, but there's no cause for alarm.
