5 Ways To Prevent Pollution This Diwali!
Every year in India it becomes difficult to breathe for the entire Diwali week. Heavy smoke, heaps of used explosives and papers and a din in the eardrums is what we are left with after the celebration are over. It is hard to think that a few small changes on our end can help prevent pollution in many ways. We want to sit in a boiling pot of pollution until it kills us slowly. If you want to make a difference then start with Diwali 2011. There are some very simple ways by which pollution can be prevented in spite of enjoying Diwali.
Here is a list of 5 simple ways to prevent pollution on Diwali 2011.
5 Ways To Prevent Pollution This Diwali:
1. Use Green Lights: Lighting up our homes is the most integral part of Diwali celebrations. There is a custom that the entire house has to be lit up with light bulbs for at least 1 week before and after Diwali. Just imagine how much pollution you can prevent if you use green lights instead of the traditional oil lamps. Use colourful electronic lights that run on green energy to make this Diwali eco-friendly.

2. Burst Crackers In An Open Space: The maximum pollution during Diwali happens due to the firecrackers and the smoke they release on burning. We definitely cannot stop burning crackers or else it will kill all the fun filled excitement of the festival. However, we can burst crackers responsibly. This Diwali instead of bursting crackers on roads or in front of apartments go to a wide open space away from residential areas to do the same.
3. Say No To Sound Pollutions: Diwali is best described as the festival of light and not heart wrenching sounds. So there is absolutely no traditional justification for bursting chocolate bombs and red lars that are an assault to the ears. Sound pollution is just as harmful as the smoke from firework pollution; it is just more dangerous because you can't see it.
4. Clean Up Your Own Mess: It is completely fine if you burst crackers and it is bound to leave some garbage behind. However, you can always take the initiative to clean up all the mess you are making. After Diwali take one weekend off just for collecting and disposing the left over garbage in front of your own house or building.
5. Diwali Does Not Have To Be Plastic: The smoke pollution on Diwali is understandable but what about the plastic covers of the fire crackers, the sweet boxes disposed offhandedly and the broken bottles in the middle of the alleys. Let Diwali not be an excuse for drunken and disorderly behaviour. Collect all the plastic and non-explosive garbage separately so that it can be disposed appropriately.
If you follow even a few of these ways to prevent pollution at home on Diwali 2011 then you will be doing your bit.
