Nerve Injuries & Neuropathies Of The Hand
Nerves are akin to the wiring in the house, which convey various signals from one part of the body to the other.
They are different from arteries and veins, which essentially carry blood.
A nerve is responsible for various types of sensation like touch, pain, pressure, etc. Nerves of the hand and leg are different from the nerves in the brain.

Mode Of Nerve Injuries:
- Cut injury by knife, glass or sharp objects
- Compression of the nerve in a tight compartment (bony or fascial)
- Vitamin deficiency
- Thyroid problems
- Blunt injury by traction due to road traffic accidents or during birth, at the neck
- Tumours of the nerve
Harbingers Of The Nerve Injured:
- Sensation of pins and needles in the hand
- Tingling and numbness in the hand
- Weakness (decrease in grip strength)
- Deformity in later stages
Some Of The Compression Problems Of The Hand:

Majority of the nerve problems can be clinically diagnosed and a few may require further advanced medical tests to support the diagnosis.
There are plenty of successful treatment options based on the cause. The treatment modalities include medicines, physiotherapy or surgery and sometimes a combination.
Initially, carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated with physiotherapy like stretching exercises, but beyond a certain period, it will require a surgical treatment.
Cut nerve can be repaired by microsurgical techniques. Nerves lost in an injury can be reconstructed. A well-repaired nerve by good microsurgical techniques can give excellent results and restore a good function.
With newer treatment modalities, patients have a very good chance for recovery and return to normalcy.
