'Rare' Hernia Surgery
Chennai, : Sri Ramachandra University has performed a 'rare' surgery to rectify congenital diaphragmtic hernia on a two-day-old baby.
A University release here said the surgery was performed through thoracoscopic procedure.
Under the procedure, a hole was made in the diaphragm-the portion between abdomen and chest- through which the intenstines go into the chest cavity.
The surgery was performed by making three holes in the chest wall and the thin partition was cut open and stitched with the help of fine instruments.
The complexity of the procedure is the limited space available for doing this surgery and it required dexterity on the part of the surgeon.
''It is technically-demanding and requires excellent perioperative anaesthetic management,'' the release added.
