New COVID Variant In Israel: Is It A Variation Of The Deadly Omicron? Everything You Need To Know
In Israel, two cases of unidentified Covid variants have been confirmed. According to local media, the virus is a combination of the BA.1 and BA.2 variants [1].
On Thursday, local media reported that a new virus combination was discovered in two people who had returned from abroad and landed at Israel's Ben-Gurion International Airport. The patients were a couple in their 30s who contracted the infection from their infant [2].

The report didn't mention anything about the infant's condition.
Listed below are the details we currently know about the new COVID variant in Israel.
New COVID Variant In Israel: Everything You Need To Know
- According to a report in the Israeli daily Haaretz, the virus is a combination of BA.1 (Omicron) and BA.2 variants.
- As per the reports, the patients showed symptoms such as fever, headaches, and muscle pain, but did not require specialised medical treatment.
- Among the most prevalent SARS-CoV-2 strains, Omicron and its subvariants have been identified as the predominant strains. The original Omicron strain (BA.1) was first identified in Botswana and South Africa in late November 2021, and cases soon appeared in other countries [3].
- BA.2 subvariants have been called stealth Omicrons because they contain genetic mutations that make them more difficult to distinguish from the Delta variant using PCR tests. So, while a BA can be detected using PCR tests.
- Israel is experiencing a decline in infections caused by omicron, but a rise in infections caused by BA.2.

- Additionally, the report cited experts who stated that when two viruses are contracted and are in the same cell within the body, they are more likely to link up.
- The process of multiplying and exchanging genetic material leads to the creation of a new virus, known as genetic recombination, which is considered a normal process for virus evolution. In order to avoid the emergence of new and potentially more virulent strains of a virus, it is essential to be vaccinated against multiple strains of a virus [4].
- Currently, the coronavirus carrier number remains below 1, but is gradually increasing. On Wednesday, the number, calculated based on data from the previous 10 days, reached 0.9, the highest since January. An R number greater than one indicates that the virus is spreading rapidly [5].
