Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023: What Happens If You Wear The Same Pad For More Than 5 Hours?
Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on 28 May every year. The day aims to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management. It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2014 and the date 28 was chosen to acknowledge that 28 days is the average length of the menstrual cycle.

Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023 theme is 'making menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030.'
As part of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, let's discuss what happens when you wear the same pad for more than five hours. When should you change your pad?
What Happens If You Wear The Same Pad For More Than 5 Hours?
Wearing the same sanitary pad for more than five hours can have some serious implications for your health. If you wear a pad for an extended period of time, the pad will not be able to absorb the menstrual flow and can cause the blood to back up. This can lead to a range of uncomfortable and even dangerous health issues.
How does it affect your health?
Yeast infection
One of the most common issues that can arise from wearing a pad for too long is a yeast infection. Yeast infections occur when the pH balance of the vagina is disrupted, leading to an overgrowth of the fungus Candida [1]. Wearing the same pad for an extended period of time creates a warm, moist environment in which these fungi can thrive and cause an infection.

Urinary tract infections
In addition to yeast infections, wearing the same pad for too long can also increase your risk of urinary tract infections. The bacteria from the menstrual flow can travel up the urethra and cause an infection [2]. Wearing the same pad for an extended period of time can also lead to skin irritation, especially around the labia and genital area.
Toxic shock syndrome
Wearing the same pad for too long can also cause toxic shock syndrome. Toxic shock syndrome is a serious bacterial infection that can be fatal if it is not treated promptly. Wearing the same pad for an extended period of time can increase your risk of developing this infection [3].
In addition to all of these, it can also cause bad odour, which can be really embarrassing tbh and is unhygienic.
How Often Should I Change My Pad?
It is important to make sure that you change your sanitary pad every three to four hours, or when it is full. Doing so will help prevent any health issues that can arise from wearing the same pad for too long [4].

On A Final Note...
In the event of a light flow or no flow, bacteria can build up in the pad, so changing it every 3 or 4 hours, or more if your period is heavy, is a good hygiene practice that helps combat bad odours and promotes good hygiene.
