How Pollution May Cut Short Your Lifespan: New Research Reveals Alarming Insights
New research based on satellite data has determined that Delhi is among the most polluted cities in the world, and it has revealed that the city has the lowest level of air pollution.
The University of Chicago's Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) released its latest Air Quality Life Index. According to the report, India has among the dirtiest air in the world - yes, IN THE WORLD.

If air pollution levels do not improve, an average Indian may lose 5.3 years of life.
How Bad Is It, Really? Delhi's Shocking Rank In Air Quality
Satellite data doesn't lie, and the truth it reveals about Delhi's air quality is nothing short of shocking. Despite its rich cultural heritage and economic significance, Delhi is now notorious for being among the most polluted cities globally, thanks to alarmingly high levels of air pollution.
But that's not the only shocking revelation - the city has now hit a grim milestone of having the lowest level of air quality.

Important points from the study:
- The report says that rising air pollution can cut life expectancy by more than five years per person in South Asia, which has been found to be one of the world's most polluted regions.
- Among the most polluted countries, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan are from this region - accounting for more than half of the total life years lost globally to pollution.
- The annual average particulate pollution level in India, the report says, exceeds the 5 g/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre) limit set by WHO.
- It also found that 67.4% of India's population lives in areas that exceed the country's own national air quality standard of 40 g/m3.
Is India Responsible For The Increase In World Pollution?
It claims that India was responsible for 59.1% of the world's increase in pollution during 2013-21.
The reports say even in the least polluted district, Pathankot in Punjab, particulate pollution is more than seven times the WHO limit, taking 3.1 years off life expectancy if current levels persist.

On A Final Note...
Delhi's new-found title as one of the world's most polluted cities isn't just a label; it's an urgent call to confront a pressing crisis.
The latest insights from the EPIC's Air Quality Life Index underscore the high stakes of India's air pollution problem.
