100% Natural Sindoor Recipe
Ever wondered what role that pinch of scarlet powder married women wear in the parting of their hair really plays? It goes beyond mere beautification or acting as a symbol of matrimony. It has scientific reasons behind it.
Sindoor or vermilion powder is made of turmeric, lime and mercury. Mercury controls body temperature, relieves stress and keeps you calm. It also boosts sexual drive, one of the reasons why widowed women are prohibited from applying it.

The colour red of sindoor signifies blood and fire. And it is applied in the partition of our hair, where all the major nerves are centred, activating the chakras in the body, reinforcing a feeling of positivity.

Now you know how vermilion plays a crucial role in a married woman's life. You should also be aware of what it is composed of. Traditionally, vermilion is made of natural ingredients, but over the counter vermilion people today opt for consists of lead oxide, synthetic dye and sulphate.
Synthetic dyes cause baldness, lead oxide causes skin irritation and the sulphate present increases the risk of skin cancer. And if you are pregnant, applying chemical-based sindoor can also cause harm to your unborn child.
A safer option is to go for natural ingredients instead. Listed here is a recipe on how to make 100% organic vermilion powder at home.

Ingredients
- 1 Part turmeric
- 1 Part slaked lime or calcium hydroxide
- A few drops of rosewater
- 1 Teaspoon rose petal paste

Direction To Follow
- Mix calcium hydroxide with turmeric in a bowl. Add in the rose petal paste and whisk until all the components combine well.
- You will notice the shade change from bright orange to brick red. For a deeper red hue, add in extra calcium hydroxide, until you get the desired shade.
- Once the paste dries, it will have an orange hue. To keep the paste moist, add rose water as and when required.
Even though most of the ingredients mentioned here are non-toxic, calcium hydroxide when applied in high concentration can cause skin irritation. So, make sure to patch test the recipe first, before using it. And do let us know your views, down in the comment section.
