Herbs have been used in India for centuries and for good reasons. Herbs are both safe and extremely effective in combating stress, skin issues and hair issues.
Herbs also have an appealing aroma that makes them a good addition to relaxing baths and aroma therapy techniques.
Turmeric and calendula are 2 herbs that are commonly used to treat skin ailments. Turmeric and calendula are also used to create DIY face masks, skin lotions and creams.
Turmeric is often used to calm the skin and lighten dark spots. Calendula, on the other hand, can be used to treat pimples, get rid of scars and treat wounds naturally.

Calendula has antiseptic properties that can prevent nasty infections from making home in your skin. When combined with other ingredients such as oils, both turmeric and calendula can make powerful beauty concoctions.
Apple cider although not a herb is known for it's ability to make black hair shine. Similarly, apple vinegar and hot white tea can be used to get rid of zits, blemishes and prevent the onset of pimples.
There are two herbs that are known well by almost everyone but not often used to create DIY recipes.

Lavender: The sweet smell of Lavender essential oils, we all know about it and love it! While using lavender oil is best known to cure rattled nerves, this potent herb can also give you a better-looking skin.
Lavender oil can be used by itself or along with other ingredients to prevent the early on-set of wrinkles, promote healing and prevent acne attacks. Making your own lavender, coconut and salt bath scrub is a piece of cake.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of unscented coconut oil
- 1/2 cup of Epsom salt
- 10 drops of lavender essence oil
Method
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Store in an air-tight container. Use it when required.

Thyme: Thyme oil products are most popular in the Mediterranean region, but are globally known to fight acne and keep it away. Thyme oil can also be used to fight hair loss in both men and women who are combating scalp issues such as dandruff.
Thyme oil can be massaged on to the scalp region carefully and slowly to prevent your beautiful tresses from falling. Thyme oil when used with 1 potent ingredient can make a powerful acne-busting cream.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons of bi-carbonate soda/baking soda - To be handled and used with caution
- 2 drops of thyme oil
- 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil
- 3 drops of pomegranate oil (optional)

Method
Place a clean jar on the work table. Mix thyme oil with jojoba oil and pomegranate oil. Using a clean spoon slowly add in the baking soda, one teaspoon at a time. Store in a cool place and use only on the affected areas. Do not apply on the full face. Do not use this treatment if you have sensitive skin, as baking soda can cause rashes in people with a sensitive skin.
