Exclusive: Hazards Of Using Synthetic Holi Colours, Doctor-Approved Tips On How To Protect Your Skin, Hair
It's time to celebrate Holi, the festival of colors. However, many overlook the fact that the colours they use can be hazardous and harmful to their skin, especially if they are synthetic and not natural. Synthetic colours, widely available, can trigger allergic reactions on the skin and persist under nails and behind ears for weeks.
In an interview with Boldsky, Dr Deepthi T N, Dermatology Consultant at Kinder Hospital, explains the hazards of using synthetic colors on Holi and what you must do instead to ensure your hair and skin remain healthy, post celebrations.

Impact of Holi Colours on Health: Skin and Hair Effects
Synthetic colors are often made from chemicals that can cause a range of issues, from mild irritation to more serious health concerns. They can also penetrate hair strands, causing dryness and frizz. Opting for natural, vegetable-derived colors is recommended as they are easier to remove, says Dr Deepthi.
What are the skin problems one can face after using Holi colours?
Common skin problem after using holi colours is irritation or allergy. Irritant dermatitis starts shortly after contact with colour and presents with itching, burning sensation, the skin can even turn red. Mica dust when used in holi colours can cause abrasions on the facial skin", she says.
Pre-Holi Skin And Hair Care Tips
Here are a few Pre Holi skin and hair care tips listed by Dr Deepthi TN.
1. Before you step out with colours, it is necessary to protect your skin with some moisturizer and hair with oil.
2. Don't use too much - just enough to coat the skin and hair.
3. Keep your nails trimmed and clean to avoid colour residues.
4. Apply sunscreen on the exposed parts.
5. Choose a water and sweat-resistant sunscreen. Keep your hair oiled & tied, braided, or covered.
6. Apply lip balm/vaseline/bioline/petroleum jelly on your lips.
7. Fully covered clothes are better.
8. Avoid usage of exfoliants or chemical peels, and therapies such as threading, waxing, bleaching, and laser treatment on the skin at least 5 days prior and 5 days after Holi.
Using Organic Colours Which Are Alternatives To Chemical/Synthetic Colours
Organic colours are safer than synthetic colours any day. However, all holi colours are best avoided in patients with pre-existing dermatoses", adds Dr Deepthi.
Measures For A Healthier Skin And Hair After Holi
According to Dr. Deepthi, these measures will protect your skin and hair post-Holi.
1. It is compulsory to moisturize your skin before applying Holi colors and wash off as early as possible.
2. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, and using hot water while washing off. After Holi celebrations, it's better to shower immediately to remove Holi colors.
3. Gentle and effective cleansers can be used for a bath.
4. Avoid scrubbing, rubbing, etc. After the bath, apply moisturizer all over your body.
5. Avoid activities in your skincare routine for 2 days post-holi; sunscreen and moisturizer to be continued.
