When Is Gudi Padwa 2024? According to the Hindu calendar, the Hindu New Year begins on the Pratipada date of Chaitra month, along with it, the Marathi New Year 1946 also begins. On this day, a special festival is celebrated in the form of Gudi Padwa. This holy festival is celebrated mainly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh.
According to the Gregorian calendar, the new year starts in January every year. All religious sects have their own set of calendars. Similarly, Hindu New Year is celebrated on a particular day. This year Gudi Padwa will be celebrated on Tuesday, 9 April 2024. The Pratipada Tithi begins at 11:50 pm on 08 April 2024 and Pratipada Tithi will end at 08:30 pm on 09 April 2024.
Gudi Padwa Significance
Gudi Padwa is formed by the combination of two words, Gudi means flag, Padwa means Pratipada. Therefore this special festival is known as Gudi Padwa. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Brahma had created the universe on the Pratipada of Chaitra month. For this reason, this date holds great importance.
Gudi Padwa: How Is This Festival Celebrated?
On the special occasion of the Gudi Padwa festival, people clean the doors of their houses. During this time, people decorate their houses with rangoli, flower garlands, and string lights. Along with this, an arch made of mango or Ashoka leaves is tied at the main entrance of the house. Many types of dishes are prepared.
A flag i.e. 'Gudi' is placed at the main entrance of the house, after which a Swastika is drawn on a clean vessel and wrapped in a silk cloth. Along with this, there is also a tradition of applying oil on one's body and taking a bath during Brahma Muhurta. There is also a provision to eat jaggery along with Neem copal for good health.
