Thirukkural- On Virtue- Penance-Kural-268

He who has controlled his ego and mastered himself, By doing penance, will be the object of universal worship.
The man, who has so done his duty of penance as to be in full control of his senses and ultimately of himself, will certainly achieve a status in which all living beings shall look upon him as upon God himself. Manakudavar envisages the overcoming of one's pride and ego as the path to victory over self.
The ultimate in the progress from love to compassion is to forget first one's ego and then one's own existence as brought out here.
The following passages of the Gita are relevant;
'Objects fall away from the abstinent man, leaving
the longing behind. But his longing also ceases,
who sees the Supreme'.
'The steadfast, having controlled them all (the senses)
sits focused on Me as the Supreme. His wisdom is
steady, whose senses are under control'.
(Gita 2;59, 61)
Such a man has established union with Godhead and naturally will become the object of universal worship.
