According to the legend, Brahma and Vishnu once argued over who was supreme. During the dispute, Brahma is believed to have insulted Shiva and become consumed by arrogance. In response, Shiva manifested Kaal Bhairav from his third eye.

Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head to destroy his ego and restore balance. But because harming Brahma was considered a grave sin, Bhairav wandered carrying the skull until he finally attained liberation in Kashi, now known as Varanasi.

The story is often interpreted as a reminder that pride and unchecked ego eventually lead to downfall, no matter how powerful a person may be.
