We have all heard of Gada-yuddha or the war using mace. It takes a strongest person to use it skillfully and kill enemy with one blow from the mace. It is a martial art with prescribed techniques of fighting which is mentioned in puranas.Hanuman's Gada was presumably the largest one of all in three worlds.

The Gada is a blunt mace or club which is most famously seen in the hands of Lord Hanuman. Other Gods and mythological heroes had it as their weapon but Hanuman is very popular for his mace. Known for his strength, Hanuman is the God of wrestlers in south and southeast Asia. Gada was a gift to Hanuman by Kuber, the storehouse of treasures.

The Legend

The Gada has a historical antecedents that come along with it. Gada was a terrible demon who struck terror in the hearts of humanity but he was also very generous at the same time. Gods were unable to tolerate his menace and hence requested Lord Vishnu to intervene. Banking up on Gadas refusal to say no even to the silliest of requests from people, Lord Vishnu went disguised, and approached Gada, and requested Gada to give him his bones. Gada, unwilling to say no, ripped open his body and gave away his bones to Lord Vishnu who used it to build the most powerful mace in the world. As it was created from his bones, the mace came to be known as Gada.

Five Human Weaknesses

Hanuman carries his famous gada in his right hand. When it is swirled around the body, it gathers the life force of the one who wields it. It reflects on the bravery strength virility and radiance of the owner. There are different interpretations with regards to the eligibility needed to hold a Gada. To be able to hold it in his hands, one must exercise absolute control over anger greed lust ego and attachment.

Impulse control is the most basic ability that a human being needs to exercise but it is at the same time equally difficult. Greed is a human weakness that lessens your mental strength. Ego is the enemy of man according to Shri Krishna who says in Bhagavadgita " Ahankari vinashyati" Aham or ego in excess will lead to ruin. Ego masks your ability to think rationally. Then comes the attachment. Jada Bharata, who was once a maharshi, was forced to be born as a deer due to a pet deer that he was associated with. He has so much of attachment towards the deer that he was born as a deer in his next birth. So these five enemies do not qualify you for learning the techniques of wielding a mace.

What Does The Mace Indicate In Various Positions?

If mace is held upright position, it indicates agitation one needs to control the situation, and use judgmental abilities to bring situation back to control.
If the mace is lowered and is pointed at the tip of the right foot. And feet generally relaxed, then it shows peace and that society is well controlled.
There are vertical and horizontal lines in the mace of Hanuman of which the vertical lines indicate Rajo guna. The horizontal, Tamo guna and the one who carries it has sattvaguna. Sattva and rajas together make up the soldierly sprit. The mace symbolizes dissolution.

When the mace is lowered and placed on the right side, with tip pointing out, with Hanuman In the sitting meditative position, it shows total prosperity and happiness and everyone is in peace and enjoying abundance.
