Adi Sankara Bhagavadpada - Part III
The lives of saints contain a lot of events. But the most important fact is that they were not in the least swayed by those events by steadily abiding in the true self. What need to be spoken about the great Sankara who propagated Advaitam!
The veracity of the Advaitic principles was said to be confirmed by Lord Shiva himself when a hand emerged out of the Lingam in Thiruvidaimaruthur confirming the fact. This was when the people there refuted the philosophy. In Thiruvanaikaval, Sankara was said to have reduced the intensity of the Goddess Akilandeswari's fierceness by presenting two huge earrings, Tatankam. Sankara also established a Yantra in Tirupati for followers who visit the shrine to increase in multi folds to receive the blessings of the Lord.
Sankara was once engrossed in deep meditation in a place called Hatakeswaram where a Kabalika wanted to use him as an object for his sacrifice to God. Would that any day deter the Master who advocated Advaita far and wide?, according to which one was not his body. So he readily agreed to be killed. As the kabalika, Kirakashan aimed his weapon to slay Sankara, Lord Narasimha appeared and slew him thus saving Sankara.. He was further instructed by Lord Vishnu to retrieve His sculpture from the Alakananda river and have it consecrated in a temple. Sankara followed as instructed and the Badrinarayan temple in Badrinath came into being. This is one among the most significant pilgrimage destinations of India.
