Buddha Purnima holds immense significance for people who follow Buddhism. There is a belief that Buddha was born on the full moon day in the Vaisakha month, according to the Hindu Calendar. It is this day on which he attended enlightenment.
Buddha Purnima is also known as Buddha Jayanti and Vaisakh Purnima and it is said that Gautam Buddha was the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. While this day is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm, there are certain rules that need to be observed on this day. Check out the dos and don'ts when while consuming food.

This year Buddha Purnima will be celebrated on 05 May 2023. Purnima Tithi begins on 04 May 2023 at 11:44 pm and Purnima Tithi ends on 05 May 2023 at 11:03 pm.

What You Can Eat On Buddha Purnima
On Buddha Purnima, Kheer is prepared and is made in almost every house this day. It is believed that offering kheer containing milk, rice and dry fruits pleases the Buddha. After this, feed Kheer to all family members in the form of Prasad and consume it yourself as well.
There is a legend that is associated with Gautam Buddha and Kheer. According to this story, there was a cowherd woman named Sujata. While doing penance, he mistook Buddha to be a tree soul.
She expressed her desire for a child and then the woman was blessed with one. Pleased with the outcome, she offered kheer made of rice and milk to Buddha. Since then, there is a belief that Buddha is very fond of kheer, and therefore, this dessert is offered to him on the day of Buddha Purnima.
What You Can't Eat On Buddha Purnima
One needs to avoid consuming tamasic food on the day of Buddha Purnima. Do not eat meat, fish, egg etc. on this day. If possible, avoid using onion and garlic in food. Also, one needs to stay away from alcohol. Avoid using any type of intoxicant. You must eat only satvik food on this day.
