The Instant Illumination Of Totakacharya

Totakacharya was a disciple of Adi Shankara Bhagavadpada apart from his three other disciples, Padmapada, Hasthamalaka, Sureshwaracharya. Totakacharya though a dull student, spent most of his time in serving his Guru in all possible ways with utmost dedication and devotion.
One day as the Master was about to expound the truth of the Brahma Sutras, Totakacharya took a little more time to wash the clothes of the Master. The other disciples urged the Master to commence the session saying that Totakacharya would not be able to grasp the subtle significances of the verses of the vast scripture. Adi Shankara in order to quell the pride of his other students, in an instant illuminated Totakacharya by showering His grace.
Totakacharya moved by the Master's grace, rushed to the class exclaiming, “O ocean of nectar of illumined knowledge of the whole shastras, thou has shown to me the treasure of the meaning of the great Upanishads.I meditate on thy lotus feet in my heart. O Sankara, my teacher, be thou my refuge. I meditate on thee who expounded the identity of the Jiva and Ishwara. O Sankara thou art my God. I am therefore full of joy. Thou has made the ocean dry which was filled with the waters of infatuation in me. O Sankara my spiritual guide, it is by the result of great virtuous deeds done by me for a long period that I have the love for the vision of thy lotus feet. Do protect this humble self, O Sankara, my spiritual preceptor"
The other disciples were dumb founded by the instant illumination that shone forth in the out pour of devotion coupled with knowledge with all trace of dullness dispelled.
The grace of the master alone can illuminate one as even the essential effort needed for spiritual progress can only aid one to a certain extent. The rest that remains which cannot be accessed by the mind, is with the beyond or the Grace that throws opens the portals of enlightenment.
