World Health Day 2026: You’re Not As Healthy As You Think—Here’s Why
All About Your Baby's Sleep Pattern
It is so pleasant to see the baby sleep. The sweet smile, the transparency face always de-stresses anybody who sees the newborn. But a question strikes in every mother about the baby sleep pattern. Today we shall take a look at the sleep pattern, the minimum and maximum time limit for the baby sleep. Take a look.
It is said that a newborn requires atleast 16 to 20 hours of sleep. A 30-minute nap during the day is also fine. Although infants wake up periodically, putting them back to sleep is never a bad idea. Mommies need not worry that their babies would get lazier as they grow because of oversleep as it is the time only to nap and rest.
A few important tips and guidelines on baby sleep duration is listed below. Make a note.
1. AGE: Newborn
Baby Sleep Duration: 16 to 20 hours per day
2. After 2 weeks
Baby Sleep Duration: 16 to 18 hours per day
3. After 4 months
Baby Sleep Duration: 9 to 12 hours plus two naps (2 hours each)
4. After 6 months
Baby Sleep Duration: 11 hours plus two naps (2 hours each)
5. After 1 year
Baby Sleep Duration: 10 to 11 hours plus two naps (1 to 2 hours each)
An interesting fact about why babies don't sleep in the night but develop naps only during day is because they do not know the difference between day and night.
And to make them know the difference, mothers need to act as if they are tired and sleeping. Generally babies wake up when hungry so keeping their daily food ready will not disturb their usual sleep pattern.
Inorder to avoid her sleep patterns during day. Try to keep her room always bright, keep talking to her and play to keep her awake and active.
If mums breastfeed, it is important to remember that the hormones get reorganized with the baby's sleep timings without depriving mum's sleep timings.
Swaddling and singing in the night will also help the newborn get good sleep as it is used to it in the mother's womb. Do not forget to feed the baby periodically (after every 2 hours).
