Lakme Fashion Week 2012 Goes Indian

This year the best of Lakme Fashion week has decided to show case Indian fabrics to beat the heat of the summer in rather traditional designs. The two best examples of this were the collections coming from Paromita Banerjee & Soumitra Mondol and also the Deepika Govind Collection.
The Beauty Of Bengal:
It is very well known that Indian cotton is the best dress material to keep the tropical summer at bay. In fact cotton sarees are the best clothes to wear in the heat of the sultry summers in India. 'Bunon', a beautiful collection in Lakme Fashion Week this year stresses exactly on this point. The designer Soumitra Mondol hailing from Bengal has presented this concept in an innovative way. The word 'Bunon' in Bengali means 'woven'. These cotton weaves are the famously translucent cotton of Bengal hailing from Dhaka.
The thrust of this collection was the Zamdani designs. Summer fashion 2012 does not have to be drab just because it is hand woven cotton. In fact, Zamdanai thread (usually gold) are the most gorgeous for any kind of designs. What we call as Zamdani Dhakai sarees are wedding wear in the state of Bengal.
In The hand of the best designers of the country this material has taken the shapes of stitched kurtis, skirts, sarees and the show stopping lehnga with the most intricate floral designs you will see. And these traditional designs are perfectly suitable for summer because the cotton is very light, almost translucent.
The Woman in Blue Checks – Cauvery’s Tale:
As is obvious from the name, Deepika Givind's collection for Lakme Fashion Week has a theme originating in Karnataka. She has used literally a plethora of Indian fabrics to celebrate this Fashion festival in its true sense of bringing variety. The thread of the theme is held together by the fact that whatever you have is all in checks and the dominating colour is blue in shades of indigo, cyan and various others.
This collection clothes for Summer fashion 2012 comprises of indian materials like Kanjivaram, Mushroo cotton, Venkalgiri, Ajrakk naming only a few. The prints are hand prints, appliques and cutouts paired with frayed out edges to give it a rustically rugged look. The couture contains mix of Indian (sarees, kurtis) and western designs (tunics, dresses) to wear this summer again adding to the variety.
There is no doubt that that Lakme Fashion week has set the stage for a summer dominated by ethnic designs of India.
