Few stories have the power to captivate us more because they are still a mystery. Codes, puzzles and cryptic public art tease us with their intrigue. Despite the efforts of our most learned historians, cleverest cryptographers and most determined treasure hunters, history is replete with riddles that continues to confound us today.

Here's a look at some of the world's biggest unsolved mysteries.

Are We Alone?

Even if we eventually solve all of the mysteries of our bodies, our planet and our universe, there remains yet another puzzle, and it is perhaps the most gob-smacked of all. The possibility of cosmic realms beyond our own. Even after exhaustive and extensive research and the whole ensemble of new results, the veil of mystery still remains the same about other forms of life that exists in the world outside of us.

The Bermuda Triangle or Devil's Triangle

As we all know the Bermuda triangle is an area in the North Atlantic Ocean in which a large number of planes and boats have gone missing in mysterious circumstances. Over the years many explanations have been put forward for the disappearances including bad weather, alien abductions, time warps, and suspension of the laws of physics. Although substantial documentation exists to show that many of the reports have been exaggerated, there is still no explanation for the unusually large number of disappearances in the area.

Voynich manuscript

The Voynich Manuscript is a medieval document that is considered as one of the biggest unsolved mysteries. It is written in an unknown script and in an unknown language. For over one hundred years people have tried to break the code to no avail. The overall impression given by the surviving suggests that it was meant to serve as a pharmacopoeia and has illustrations and presentations about plants and their medicinal uses. However, the puzzling details of illustrations have fueled many theories about the book's origin, the contents of its text, and the purpose for which it was intended.

Marfa lights

This is another one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in the world. The Marfa lights are unexplained lights (also called ghost lights) that have been appearing on Mitchell Flat east of Marfa, Texas. The lights are described as being the size of a basketball, floating in the air at around shoulder height. Colours are usually described as white, yellow, orange or red, but green and blue are also sometimes reported. They usually travel laterally but have been seen to move rapidly in various directions. The light sometimes appear in groups. Sightings are rare but there is a large amount of photographic and video evidence.

The Bigfoot

Also known as the Sasquatch, Bigfoot is depicted as an ape-like man who inhabits forest areas of the pacific north-west and parts of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Over the years there have been many sightings and photographs of Bigfoot but no conclusive proof exists to verify his existence. Isn't it a scary unsolved mystery?
