Smokers In The U.K. Smoke For A Different Reason

The findings came to light on the same day when a study conducted by the Office for National Statistics (O.N.S.) showed that fewer people agree with the smoking ban in pubs than in restaurants. The other strange revelation that comes post this research, is almost quarter of the smokers who had been a part of the research wanted to quite smoking. And strangely, the reason was not because of the health threat, but of the expenses they had to incur because of smoking.
Most of these smokers felt they couldn't afford the money that they had spent on smoking. Along with this, the O.N.S. Survey also found that road accidents were the main cause for people's death in U.K., even more than the number of people who dies every years due to smoke-related illness.
On this, Dr. Jenny Fidler, one of the paper's authors says, "This study has shown there are key differences in motives for continued smoking." He adds: "We need to look at these motives more closely to see how relevant they are when it comes to giving up smoking successfully."
Jean King, of Cancer Research UK, concluded "Understanding why people smoke is vital if quit smoking programs are to be more successful. These results highlight just how complex the nicotine addiction is."
