Meet Marissa Teijo: 71-Year-Old Woman Is The Oldest One To Compete In Miss Texas USA
Beauty pageants have long been a platform for celebrating grace, poise, intelligence, and talent. While traditionally dominated by younger contestants, the landscape of beauty pageants is evolving to embrace diversity and inclusivity, including age diversity.
The notion that age is just a number in beauty pageants is gaining momentum, challenging stereotypes and opening doors for women of all ages to shine. This shift is redefining beauty standards and empowering women to pursue their dreams regardless of age.

Age Is Just A Number
Recently, Marissa Teijo, a 71-year-old beauty queen from Texas, has demonstrated that age is merely a number by becoming the oldest woman to participate in the Miss Texas USA competition. The El Paso resident will compete against nearly 100 other women Houston this weekend.
The Miss Universe Organization recently removed age limits for contestants in an effort to be more inclusive. Teijo hopes her achievement will serve as evidence that it's never too late to chase one dreams, stating, "I feel that all women now have a new stage of opportunity, strength and beauty."
The CEO of Bazaar Models, Jackie Garcia-Martinez, who represents Teijo among other contestants, expressed her pride in representing "women of all shapes, ages and races." If Teijo wins the preliminary round, she will represent Texas in the Miss USA pageant in Los Angeles on August 4.
In a related story, Alejandra Rodriguez, 60, narrowly missed winning the Miss Argentina competition and becoming the oldest Miss Universe contestant ever. Also in another groundbreaking moment for the pageant world, Bailey Anne Kennedy, 31, was crowned the first-ever transgender Miss Maryland USA in June. She will compete at the Miss USA competition as well.
Breaking Stereotypes
The inclusion of older women in beauty pageants is a powerful statement against ageism. It challenges the stereotype that beauty is confined to youth and highlights that elegance, charm, and confidence are ageless qualities. Women who participate in beauty pageants later in life often bring a wealth of experience, wisdom, and resilience, which can inspire others and redefine beauty standards.
For instance, the Miss Senior America pageant, established in 1972, specifically celebrates women aged 60 and above. Contestants are judged not only on their appearance but also on their talent, philosophy of life, and community involvement. This pageant has paved the way for similar competitions worldwide, emphasizing that beauty and achievement are not limited by age.
Empowerment And Confidence
Participating in beauty pageants can be a transformative experience for women of all ages. For older contestants, it offers an opportunity to reclaim their confidence, embrace their individuality, and showcase their talents. The rigorous preparation involved-ranging from fitness routines and talent development to public speaking and interview skills-can be incredibly empowering.
Many older women who compete in beauty pageants report a renewed sense of purpose and self-worth. The experience often encourages them to pursue other ambitions, whether it's starting a new career, engaging in community service, or simply living life more fully. By stepping onto the pageant stage, they demonstrate that it's never too late to chase dreams and make an impact.
