Female Genital Mutilation is also known as FGM or female circumcision. This is a serious issue that the world is fighting against. Approximately, around 200 million women and girls are affected by this bizarre ritual practice that is still being followed in some parts of the world!

How Many Girls Are Affected?
According to a UNICEF report, approximately 200 million women and girls from over 30 countries are affected due to this bizarre barbaric ritual!

What Happens Exactly In This Practice?
In female genital mutilation, a partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons, is done.

Highest Rate Of Mutilation
The highest rates of genital mutilation in females is noted between the ages of 15 and 49 years. This ritual or practice is seen more in Somalia, Guinea, and Djibouti.

Young Girls Get Affected The Most!
Did you know that about one-fourth of all these cases around the world are girls under the age of 14 years! In couple of countries, girls who are just 5 years of age have also gone through this torture!

How It Is Practiced!
FGM has been practiced with the least hygienic conditions! With less hygiene, medications, etc., the results is that women and girls suffer infections, painful scarring, long-term disabilities and in some cases, even death.

What Are The Consequences For Childbirth?
Women who have undergone FGM have a significant greater risk of requiring a Caesarean section during a childbirth. They also suffer from post-partum haemorrhage.

It Has Been Medicalised!
In countries like Egypt, most of the cutting is undertaken by trained health care professionals. This reduces the risk of an infection, pain and bleeding.
