How Ajit Pawar Lived: Inside the Life of Maharashtra’s Deputy CM — Homes, Cars and Daily Routine
In a tragic twist that stunned Maharashtra and beyond, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Anantrao Pawar died in a plane crash near Baramati on the morning of January 28, 2026, when the aircraft he was travelling in crashed-landed while approaching the runway. Officials said all aboard, including Pawar, were killed in the accident.
As the state absorbs the shock of losing one of its most influential political figures, a closer look at his life, beyond the headline, reveals a man whose day-to-day world blended political discipline with an understated lifestyle, and whose financial footprint reflected decades in public service, agriculture, and local influence.
From Baramati to Mumbai: A Home Base and Roots in Rural Maharashtra
Born in 1959 in Deolali Pravara in the Ahmednagar district, Ajit Pawar first entered politics through the cooperative movement and later made Baramati his home, both personally and politically. He represented Baramati many times in the Maharashtra State Assembly and developed strong connections with the local community.
Though he lived and worked across major cities like Mumbai and Pune, Baramati remained Ajit Pawar's home base. There, he was seen not just as a powerful leader, but as a local figure, accessible to people and closely involved in development projects that shaped the region's economy and cooperative institutions.
Assets and Wealth
In official filings, Pawar declared immovable and movable assets worth several tens of crores, including land and property holdings, and holdings in agricultural and residential land.
His previous election affidavits indicated that he owned two automobiles in addition to other types of property listed in his financial declarations.
His net worth was estimated to be very high due to his large amounts of landholdings, investments and real estate, according to several different independent financial reviewers, though the actual amount varies from one source to another.
His wife, Sunetra Pawar, is herself a public figure, a member of the Rajya Sabha, with notable assets in her own right, reflecting a household deeply connected to both politics and business interests.
Cars and Travel: Modest Choices, Functional Use
Ajit Pawar, unlike many members of India's political class, made travel choices mainly based on practicality. According to his asset disclosures, he owned a few passenger vehicles which he used for both personal and work-related travel, rather than an emphasis on flashy cars.
For longer journeys and official engagements, Pawar often relied on chartered or government-arranged aircraft, reflecting both his position and the demands of travelling frequently across Maharashtra's vast districts, including the flight that tragically ended in the Baramati crash.
Balancing Public Work with Personal Time
Pawar was an individual who possessed an intense movement throughout his day-to-day life. He spent significant amounts of time commuting to and from Baramati, Pune and Mumbai. He was constantly on the go between cabinet meetings, development activities, various activities associated with his development and political campaigns. His days often began early in Baramati and stretched late into the night with constituency work or political meetings.
Despite the demanding nature of his schedule, many of his co-workers and employees describe Pawar as someone who worked diligently and was accessible. Pawar took the time to meet with local leaders and common citizens, which contributed to developing a close relationship with his voters over time.
The Man Beyond the Office
Ajit Pawar's life was tied deeply to serving the public. He was not one to indulge in the glamor of self-promotion; rather, he remained committed to his local community and the practical aspects of politics while balancing power with realism.
