How a Blockbuster Ignited a Popcorn Boom: The Dhurandhar Effect and the Rise of Gourmet Cinema Snacks in India
There is a unique ritual that unfolds the moment the lights dim and the opening credits roll: the rustle of paper bags, the hiss of microwaves, and the unmistakable aroma of freshly popped corn. This is the 'Popcorn Moment,' a cultural heartbeat of cinema that has long driven snack consumption and, increasingly, shaped livelihoods and supply chains across the popcorn value chain.
We spoke to SBP Pattabhi Rama Rao, Managing Director, Gourmet Popcornica Pvt. Ltd, who explained the rise of the popcorn movement in India.
Blockbuster Releases Fueling Popcorn Demand
The success of films such as Dhurandhar and Avatar has helped to boost the importance of the current time. These films have helped attract a record number of viewers to multiplexes as well as single screens, thus providing a boost to the sale of popcorn at theatres.
"For distributors and theatre brands, popcorn is more than a snack; it is a high-margin complement to ticket sales. For brands, such as Gourmet Popcornica, these peaks in demand translate into opportunities to ensure high-quality produce, expand flavour portfolios, and ensure uninterrupted supply, all while honouring our farm-to-fork commitments," said Rao.
Impact on Farmers and Rural Economies
Cinema-driven demand has clear downstream effects on farmers and rural economies. When a major movie release triggers sustained, elevated sales of popcorn, we observe increased orders for premium kernels that meet the popping performance and flavour retention standards required by theatres and retail.
"At Gourmet Popcornica, we translate that demand into predictable premium contracts for our farmers. In short, blockbuster seasons create not just transient spikes in sales but meaningful uplift in farmer incomes when managed through equitable procurement programmes," added Rao.
Building a Strong Supply Chain
The interdependence between cinematic culture and the supply chain necessitates robust logistical and quality systems. "To serve theatres at scale during high-demand windows, we at Gourmet Popcornica have invested in traceable sourcing, rapid processing, and expanded cold-chain capacity to maintain kernel integrity. Our processing facilities prioritise gentle conditioning and optical sorting to ensure that the kernels popping under theatre lights deliver consistent expansion and texture, a non-negotiable for audience satisfaction," said Rao.
Refrigerated storage and temperature-controlled transport mitigate moisture fluctuation, extend shelf stability, and reduce dependence on chemical fumigation, which resonates with our sustainability goals and consumer preferences.
Partnerships and Demand Forecasting
Moreover, partnerships with exhibitors and film distributors enable demand forecasting that benefits the entire chain. "By aligning promotional calendars with production ramp-ups, we minimise stockouts and waste. Tie-ins during blockbuster windows further stimulate consumption, creating a virtuous cycle: higher sales enable better prices for farmers and additional investment in processing and cold chain infrastructure," said Rao.
Popcorn Consumption Beyond Theatres
Cinema culture also shapes consumption behaviour beyond the theatre. Memorable on-screen moments tied to popcorn can drive at-home purchases, supporting retail and e‑commerce channels. This diversification smooths seasonal fluctuations and ensures that growers and processors have steady demand even between major releases.
The Future of the 'Popcorn Moment'
Rao concluded, "As cinema evolves, immersive formats, speciality screenings, and boutique food offerings, the Popcorn Moment will continue to adapt. This is all part of our role in delighting the consumer with unique sensory experiences, and in supporting the people and systems behind every kernel."
