Christmas 2025: Banks, Markets, Schools, Transport — What’s Open And Closed In India On December 25th
Christmas Day, December 25, is a public holiday across India. While celebrations vary from place to place, one thing most people need clarity on is the practical side of the day whether banks are open, offices are working, or services are running as usual. If you're planning travel, errands, or appointments, here's a clear breakdown of what's open and what's closed in India on Christmas Day 2025.
Banks And Financial Services: Closed, But Apps Work
All bank branches across India remain closed on Christmas Day. This includes public sector banks, private banks, and cooperative banks. So no counter services, cheque deposits, or branch visits.
That said, UPI, mobile banking, net banking, and ATMs continue to function. You can still pay bills, transfer money, or withdraw cash just don't expect anyone behind a bank desk.
Stock Markets And Trading Platforms: A Full Day Off
Both BSE and NSE stay shut on December 25, 2025. There's no equity trading, no derivatives, and no commodity trading for the day. If you follow markets closely, think of this as a forced pause before year-end activity picks up again.
Government Offices And Courts: Closed
Most central and state government offices observe Christmas as a public holiday. Courts, municipal offices, and public sector administrative departments are usually closed as well, except for essential or emergency services. If you've got paperwork planned, it's best pushed to another date.
Post Offices: Not Operating
India Post offices remain closed, and there's no regular mail delivery on Christmas Day. Speed Post tracking may still update digitally, but physical movement resumes the next working day.
Schools And Colleges: Mostly Closed, State-Dependent
In most states, schools and colleges remain closed, either specifically for Christmas or as part of winter holidays. This is especially true in states like Kerala, Goa, Delhi, Maharashtra, and the Northeast.
However, school calendars are state-controlled, so a few institutions may choose otherwise. Always check your local school notice if it matters.
Hospitals And Emergency Services: Always Open
Hospitals, emergency wards, ambulances, and pharmacies stay operational. Outpatient departments may run on reduced staff, but emergency care is available as usual. Essential services don't take a holiday.
Public Transport: Running, With Minor Adjustments
Indian Railways, metro services, buses, and local transport generally operate on Christmas Day. Some city routes may follow a holiday timetable with fewer trips, but services aren't suspended. If you're travelling, checking timings in advance helps avoid waiting around.
Shops, Malls, Restaurants And Cafés: Mostly Open
This is where things feel more relaxed. Most malls, restaurants, cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, and local shops remain open, especially in metro cities. Some may open late or close early, but Christmas is often a good business day for food and retail. Church neighbourhoods, cafés, and dessert places are usually busier than usual.
Cab Services And Deliveries: Available, With Holiday Rush
Ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber, along with food and grocery delivery apps, continue operating. Availability may fluctuate during peak hours, and surge pricing isn't unusual. Plan ahead if you're stepping out during lunch or dinner time.
Places Of Worship: Active Early, Calm Later
Churches see large morning congregations, especially for Christmas Mass. By afternoon, most areas settle down, and the day takes on a quieter, slower pace across cities.

Christmas Day in India isn't about everything shutting down, it's about essentials running, offices pausing, and people slowing down just enough. Banks, government offices, post offices, and markets take the day off. Transport, hospitals, shops, food, and digital services keep going. If you're planning errands, do the paperwork another day. If you're stepping out for food, travel, or a quiet break, December 25 is actually one of the easier days to move around.
