WIN founder chosen for Js Krishna Iyer Human Rights Award-2006
Kochi, Dec 20 (UNI) Women's Initiative Network (WIN), Founder Sister Alice Lukose has been chosen for the Human Rights Award-2006.
The Human Rights Foundation, while announcing the award here today, said that through WIN, which she founded in 1991, Sr Alice had given a new life to over 12,000 families in Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts through empowerment of the women and children of fisherfolk's families.
'The daring dream and vision of Sr Alice is today a powerful movement. Over 60,000 members of the families have moved forward to a new world of empowerment, actualisation of their human rights and constructive contribution to societal advancement. The Self Help Groups which WIN has formed and operates are centres of human energy galvanised for social and economic development and transformation', it said.
The WIN activities, including thrift and credit operations, community health programmes, capacity building, seminars, training campaigns on social and gender issues, training children and youth in various measures for environmental regenaration, including backwater eco-system regenaration, campaigns on ill effects of sand mining and use of plastics and promotion of use of vermicompost and care of trees and plants.
The award will be presented to Sr Alice on December 22 at the residence of . Noted Jurist and Human Rights Activist Justice (Retd) Rajindar Sachar will present the award.
