The Allahabad museum will take out a procession tomorrow of the historic vehicle in which the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were taken to the holy sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati here, for immersion.
The Ford truck that carried the urn containing the ashes of Gandhiji for immersion on February 12, 1948, thirteen days after his assassination on January 30, was renovated and repaired after several people and the media complained that it was rusting at the museum due to consistent negligence by the authorities.
Prominent political leaders including Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu and P D Tandon rode on the vehicle during its journey from the Allahabad junction to the sangam in 1948.
Director of the museum Prof Radhakant Verma said here the proposal of repairing and renovation of the Ford was discussed with the authorities of Uttar Pradesh State Transport Corporation and repair work done under the direction of Mr Hasmat Ullah of Hindustan Engineering. He said that the procession is an endeavour to remember the contribution of Gandhiji.
Prof Verma said that the procession would begin with the recitation of Ramadhun and other favourite songs of Gandhiji by artitists of NCZCC. A running commentary will also be made of the events that took place during the immersion procession in 1948.
A symposium on Gandhiji will also be held at the museum where noted Gandhians will put forth their views.
