These days when most people are living in cities, owning a dog sometimes becomes impossible for various reasons. They may disturb in the day-to-day activities of the neighbours with their loud barks in the middle of the night. These can be a few factors for any dog lover living in the city.

One thing is sure that there is no such thing as - a dog that does not bark at all. Dogs bark in order to express their feelings. Also, each dog is an individual. Some dogs may be more vocal than the others.

Basenji: Basenji is often referred to as the ‘barkless dog’. They are breed of hunting dogs with the unique trait of being silent. They are capable of screaming, howling and growling, similar to that of a coyote or a wolf. They are also very alert, energetic and curious about strangers.

Whippet: Whippets are originally greyhounds, they are commonly called as English whippet or snap dog. They do not bark much because they tend to have a shy and reserved personality. They are not very popular as guard dogs, as they may or may not bark at strangers. But, they are good to keep as a pet, maybe in a different environment like an apartment.

Borzoi: A Borzoi, also called the Russian Wolfhound, is a domestic dog basically from Russia. These are athletic and independent dogs that bark rarely. They do not have a territorial drive, making them very poor in guarding the house. These dogs again will make great pets in an apartment or a gated community type of living.

Bullmastiff: The Bullmastiff is a solid dog with a short muzzle. These dogs are strong and powerful, but sensitive and well-mannered. They are natural guardians to their owners which requires no special training. The most prominent trait of this breed is that it is quiet and rarely barks.

Bulldog: Bulldog has a sour face but with the reputation of having a good temperament. Also, it is very friendly and patient in nature. They are most welcome into homes as they get along very well with children and other dogs. They always prefer human companionship.

Scottish Deerhound: This is a breed of hound that is a hunter, especially a deer hunter, and thus the name. They are gentle, friendly, eager to please and has a dignity. Being the deer hunter, they require a considerable amount of exercise. Therefore, they are not suited to grow in a closed environment all the time. They have a dignified personality at home. Excessive barking is out of question.
