The filter pads should be changed after a week or so of cleaning the tank.

It is not advisable to change the filter pad along with the cleaning process as it may cause a change in the existing cycle.

While changing the water never ever drain all the water from the tank as it will end up in a completely new cycle for the fish to thrive. Always stick to the habit of removing only about 10% of the water.

Not only the tank, the gravel vacuum and the filter should also be cleaned.

The gravel vacuum should be cleaned with hot water after each and every tank cleaning. This will ensure a clean vacuum for you to suck at the starting of the cleaning process the next time.
