Best Ways To Store Onions In A Kitchen
Red, yellow and white – these are the colours of various varieties of onions. At times, they form the base for the gravy. At other times, they are simply added to give a boost to the taste of a dish. Be it any part of the world and any cuisine, onions are always around. And when we use onions so much, we surely need to buy a lot of them. Having a good stock of onions means having the comfort to cook up a storm anytime. Storing onion tips come in handy in such situations.
When stocking up on onions, kitchen tips related to storing them become a must. We surely do not want to see this one basic ingredient going bad. Not only do they smell bad when they rot, but it also means a lot of money goes waste. We cannot afford to do that.

Here we discuss some basic storing onion tips to help you keep your onions fresh and long lasting. We do not want to store them in the refrigerator. They do not require that. On the contrary, it is important for them to breath and stay dry. But, when it comes to the green spring onions, they surely need to go into the fridge but not the dry red, white and yellow ones.
Storing onions in the kitchen
Our grandmothers have always stored onions and they used some simple tricks and tips to do so. They surely had larger houses with much more open space than today’s apartments, but we can adopt those methods to suit our situation. Take a look.
Paper bags: Onions need to be kept dry at all times. Paper bags are a very good option to achieve this. Segregate each type of onion and get a paper bag for them. Using a punching machine, punch holes at regular intervals in the bag. This will resemble a polka dot bag. Now, place each type of onion in a separate bag and store them away in a dark place.
No plastic: Many a times, we get onions in plastic bags. But at home, we either forget to keep them away or just out of laziness leave them in plastic bags. This can be fatal for your onions. They will not be able to breathe and with the moisture build-up inside, they will start rotting.
Panty hose: You have read it right, we are talking about a panty hose. In fact, when talking of storing onion tips, this panty hose is one of the best. Slip one onion into it, tie a knot around it and then slip another one. After each onion, tie a knot. This not only keeps them away from each other but also allows free passage of air. Hang it around your kitchen and storing becomes so easy. When you need one, just unfasten the knot and extract an onion.
No potatoes: When purchasing vegetables, we often get onion and potatoes together since these are the two most used ingredients. However, when it comes to storage, they should never be together. Storing onions along with potatoes may cause the onions to rot because of the moisture in the potatoes.
Dark and dry: Onions can be given a longer life when stored in a dark and dry place. Moisture is not good for onions as it can lead to its decay. Kitchen tips have always mentioned keeping onions away from sunlight and moisture.
