Tips to grow and care for bamboo plants:
- A bamboo plant grows easily on loam soil. Dig the soil before you plant. Loam soil might absorb moisture so be careful while adding water. The bamboo plant grows well on moist soil. Loamy soil has little moisture but can flow away with water. So, keep small bricks around to prevent the soil from flowing away.
- Be careful if you have a pet at home. Bamboo plant actually has Dracaena Sanderia that looks like a bamboo stick. The small plant can be poisonous for your pet due to its toxic acid. So, place the plant out of the reach of your pets.
- Always keep the bamboo plant in water. Fresh water is a must to keep the plant green. Change water regularly. Keep water levels at approximately 1 inch below from the base of the canes.
- Small plants can survive without sunlight. Indirect sunlight and room temperature are ideal for the growth and care of bamboo plants.
- But, if your plant is more than 1 feet, it needs direct sunlight for 30-45 minutes regularly in a day.
- Add a fertilizer in water once every month. This reduces the chances of growth of bacteria. Also add aquarium plant food in the water once in two weeks.
- Sometimes, the bamboo plant leaves become yellow in colour. People believe that yellow coloured bamboo leaves indicate that it didn't suit the individual. However, the plant leaves turn yellow when they are exposed to excessive sunlight or the water is too salty. Avoid keeping the bamboo plant near bright sunlight. If your water is salty, prefer purified water to grow bamboo plant.
- Cut the stalk if required. Make sure you cut through the stalk just from the joint. Use a clean knife. Spray a mist after cutting to allow growth of fresh buds.
- Many feng shui believers tie the stalks with a white or red ribbon to bring good fortune. You can even tie ribbons but don't tie a tight knot. The plant stalks will not spread out.
