10 Edible Flowers That Are Nutritious
A lot of health are mentioned and discussed about fruits and vegetables. Meanwhile flowers which is a very part of the vegetation is ignored considering that it is just used to spread the aroma or for decorating the garden. Flowers as we all know is beautiful to look at but at the same time it would be interesting to know that flowers are not just for eyes and nose. It is also a substance that can be eaten. Many of us are not aware that flowers are edible in nature and are used widely in cooked meals or raw salads.
The history of using flowers for cooking is not new. It is a known fact that saffron, rose petals and lotus blooms are used in Indian cuisine.
We have all heard that Chinese use chrysanthemum flowers for preparing tea as it keeps them warm. Ancient Romans are known to eat violets and squash blossoms. These flowers were also considered as healthy foods.
Some of the other flowers that are known to be edible are hibiscus (used for preparing tea), tamarind flower (widely used in South-Indian dishes) and saffron (used for colouring and for its taste). Of all the flowers mentioned, saffron is widely known spice derived from a flower and is considered as one of the the most costliest spice in today's time.
However, one of the most important facts about having edible flowers is that, unlike fruits and vegetables flowers cannot be eaten without the knowledge of it. At the same time flowers which are grown commercially or for floral arrangements should also be avoided as they are often sprayed with pesticides and other toxic chemicals.
Here is a list of plants that are edible and are widely used for cooking purpose.

Hibiscus
The flower is widely known for its effect on hair But you can use this flower to make herbal tea. Vitamin C and
minerals are abundantly found in this flower.

Squash Blossom
It is widely used in Italian and Mexican cuisines. Pastas, soups are prepared using squash blossom. Squash Blossom come from Zucchini plant. Some of the nutrients found in this flower are vitamin C and potassium.

Jasmine
Apart from decorating the house with Jasmine flowers,use it to add a flavour in tea or sweet dishes. This flower
is said to act as an antioxidant. It is also an antibacterial used for
aromatherapy.

Cornflower
It is also known as bachelor's button. Cornflour is mostly used for garnishing and dressing salads. The flower acts like a natural food dye.

Rosemary
Rosemary gives a fine taste of a mild herb so it is used for garnishing. This flower is known widely for its nutritional benefits as it contains vitamin B, A, C and is also an excellent source of iron.

Sunflower
Sunflower oil is consumed by many people. Likewise sunflower petals, stems and even the buds are used in preparing dishes as well. This flower is a rich source of vitamin and
minerals.

Violet
Viola flowers can be used to decorate salad. This flower emits a sweet smell and taste which makes it perfect to add in desserts, fruit salads and teas. This flower also has medicinal properties and is rich in vitamin A and C.

Saffron
It is the costliest spice in the world. Saffron is used for colouring food, especially sweet dishes and Kashmiri dishes like chicken curry, soups etc. Saffron is antiseptic, antidepressant, and has antioxidants that cure digestive disorders.

Lotus
Lotus, especially the stems are consumed mainly in Asian countries. This flower is used in preparing tea and is said to provide soothing effect in the body. It is rich in Vitamin A, B and C.

Carnations
This sweet flavoured flowers can be used to make candies, cakes and even wines. Petals add colour to salads and give out perfumed aroma of light clove-like or nutmeg.
