World Kidney Day 2023 : Kidney Stones Diet Plan; Sample Indian Meal Plan For Kidney Stones
Kidneys are essential organs of your body that function to remove the waste products from the blood and regulate the body's fluid levels.
Sometimes, when you have too much of certain wastes and not enough fluid in your blood, these wastes can build up and result in kidney stones [1]. here are different types of kidney stones. Each type is made of calcium oxalate, uric acid, calcium phosphate, struvite and cysteine.

The treatment for kidney stones depends on the size of the stone, what it is made of, whether it is causing pain and whether it is blocking your urinary tract. Experts say that if you have kidney stones, you may need to follow a special diet plan [2].
Kidney Stone Diet Plan
While it doesn't have to be a structured diet plan, the important fact is avoiding certain food types and consuming more foods that are beneficial for your kidney health and aid your recovery during kidney stone treatment [3].
There are times when following a special diet plan may be enough to prevent you from forming more kidney stones. On other occasions, medications, in addition to a special diet plan, may also be necessary. Some doctors recommend following the DASH Diet [4].
Here, we will provide a sample daily diet for kidney stones.
For kidney stone prevention, there is no one diet plan. Diet recommendations are determined by the type of stone and individualised based on the individual [5].
Sample Indian Meal Plan For Kidney Stones
The timings and gaps between meals mentioned here are based on expert opinions and research-based articles [6][7].
- Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)
- Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)
- Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)
- Evening (4:00-4:30PM)
- Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)

Options for breakfast for kidney stones
- 2 paratha (potato/cauliflower/methi (fenugreek)) with 2 tsp green chutney + 1 glass milk (toned)
- 1 cup bajra (millet) upma with vegetables + 1 glass of milk (toned)
- Vegetable sandwich with 4 whole wheat bread slices + cucumber,tomato, onion,spinach/lettuce + 1 glass of milk (toned)
- 3 rice dosa + 1/2 cup sambhar (less dal) + 1tsp methi chutney + 1 glass milk (toned)
- 1/2 cup cornflakes in 1 glass of milk (toned)
Options for mid-meal for kidney stones
- 1 medium size orange
- 1 banana
- 100 gm of pineapple/pomegranate/muskmelon
Options for lunch for kidney stones
- 1 cup rice + 2 roti + brinjal dish + 1/2 cup rasam + 1 glass buttermilk
- 4 jowar (sorghum) roti + 1/2 cup bitter gourd dish + 1/2 cup french beans curry + 1 glass buttermilk
- 1 cup rice + 2 roti + 1/2 cup rasam + 1/2 cup capsicum dish
- 1 cup rice + 2 roti + 1/2 cup rasam + 1/2 cup ivy gourd dish + 1 glass buttermilk
Options for evening meal for kidney stones
- 1 cup green tea + 2-3 biscuits

Options for dinner for kidney stones
- 3 bajra roti + lauki (bottle gourd) methi curry + 1/2 cup cucumber salad
- 3 roti + 1/2 cup colocasia(arbi) curry + 1/2 cup cucumber salad
- 3 jowar roti + 1/2 cup raw banana curry + 1/2 cup cucumber salad
- 3 jowar roti + 1/2 cup cauliflower curry + 1 cup cucumber salad
On A Final Note...
A diet recommended for kidney stones involves avoiding tomatoes with seeds, drinking coffee/tea and alcoholic beverages in moderation, eating sea foods and salty foods, and consuming guavas regularly.
Keep hydrated, consume an adequate amount of calcium, and consume a limited amount of animal protein.
