Macher Jhol: Spicy Fish Recipe

There are many simple fish recipes available in Indian cuisine. You can try a variety of fish dishes like fish curry, fish tikka and fish kofta for the main course. It is a very popular seafood in coastal regions especially Bengal, Odisha and Goa. Fish in Bengali sauce (Macher Jhol) is a popular seafood that is served as a side dish. Macher jhol is a very delicious and spicy fish stew that is served with rice. The aroma of garlic and ginger cooked in mustard oil can tempt you to try this seafood recipe. Macher jhol, seafood recipe:

Serves: 3
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- Rohu Fish- 500 gms (cut into medium sized pieces)
- Tomato- 1 (chopped)
- Ginger and garlic paste- 1tsp
- Green chillies paste- 1tsp
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Coriander powder- 1tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1tsp
- Cumin seeds powder- 1tsp
- Bay leaf- 1
- Salt- as per taste
- Mustard oil- 4-6tbsp
- Water- 2 cups
Procedure
- Marinate the fish pieces in salt and turmeric powder for 20 minutes.
- Heat mustard oil in a deep bottomed frying pan.
- Fry the marinated fish pieces in oil for 3-4 minutes on a medium flame. Strain and keep aside.
- Now add bay leaf and cumin seeds into the same pan. When the seeds start to splutter, add chopped tomatoes.
- Cook for 2 minutes on a medium flame and then add turmeric powder, cumin seeds powder, coriander powder and salt.
- Add green chillies, ginger-garlic paste and mix well.
- Pour water and bring it to boil.
- Add the fried fish pieces and cook till the gravy thickens. Once done, put the pan off flame.
Macher jhol is ready to eat. Serve it hot with rice or rotis.
